Vehicle Collision on Monocacy Boulevard

By Deputy Chief Brendan Beaton
October 3, 2011

Company 3 units along with Frederick County's Advanced Life Support were alerted for a vehicle collision on Monocacy Boulevard at the intersection of Progress Court. Ambulance 39 arrived on the scene reporting a T-bone style collision involving a passenger car and a tractor trailer, with the occupant of the passenger car still in the vehicle. Chief 3-1 arrived on the scene, assessing the situation. Rescue Squad 3 and Engine 31 arrived on the scene. Chief 3-1 updated the Emergency Communications Center that the subject in the passenger car was confined to the vehicle and Chief 3-1 would be establishing command, requiring extrication. Crews worked to stabilize the passenger car with cribbing. Chief 3-1 decided to have the tractor trailer driver attempt to back up, freeing the tractor trailer from the driver's side of the passenger car. Very slowly, the tractor trailer moved backwards, without movement of the passenger car, allowing the rescue crews to access the driver's side of the vehicle for extrication. Crews utilized hydraulic rescue tools and some hand tools to remove the roof, driver's side front and rear doors to access the patient. Ambulance 39's crew initiated patient care and stabilization throughout the extrication. Frederick County's Advanced Life Support (Medic 17, EMS-901) continued patient care after extrication. The patient was transported to Meritus Medical Center in Washington County.
