Emergency Communications Center alerted companies 3 and 1 to Interstate 70 eastbound at the 52 mile marker for a vehicle collision. Rescue Engine 11 was the first arriving unit reporting two vehicles with occupants still in the vehicles. Engine 31 and Ambulance 38 were on the scene. Rescue Engine 11's officer established the initial command. Chief 3-1 arrived on the scene and assumed the command while crews assessed the patients and need for additional resources. It was determined that at least one Advance Life Support unit was needed for one of the patients. The second vehicle required the removal of the driver's side door to facilitate patient removal. A second Advanced Life Support unit was called for that patient as well. Crews worked to remove and package the first patient awaiting the Advanced Life Support Unit. Command requested aviation for a priority 2 category B patient. The second patient was removed from the other vehicle as well. The first patient was taken to the Maryland State Police's Aviation Division hangar for transport to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The second patient was transported by ground unit to Meritus Hospital Center in Washington County. Both patients had serious but not believed to be life threatening injuries.
