Units from Junior Fire Company, No. 2, Fort Detrick Fire and Emergency Services, Frederick County Advanced Life Support and Maryland State Police's Aviation Division were alerted for a serious vehicle collision on Route 15 southbound at Hayward Road. Soon after the dispatch, Company 2 units advised the Emergency Communications Center that Rescue Squad 2 was out of service. Rescue Squad 3 was dispatched to assist with the incident. Units arrived on the scene to find a two vehicle collision with two seriously injured patients. Battalion Chief Chisholm of the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue was one of the first advanced life support personnel to arrive on the scene and quickly assessed the patients. It was determined that a second aviation unit would be needed for transport of patients to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Crews worked to remove the patients, assess, and treat them on the scene. Trooper 3 of the Maryland State Police Aviation Division was the first airship to arrive on the scene and was landed in the southbound lanes just south of the incident. Traffic was stopped in both directions of Route 15 while the first patient was loaded and subsequently transported. Trooper 2 was inbound and landed in the same area of Route 15 just after Trooper 3's takeoff. Both airships transported their patients to the trauma center. Maryland State Police continued to have the southbound lanes of Route 15 shutdown for their reconstruction of the incident.
