HAZMAT ASSIGNMENT AT DAR CARS OF FREDERICK ON BUCKEYSTOWN PIKE
By Officer John Arnold
July 24, 2009
A mid morning hazmat assignment was transmitted by ECC approximately 09:30 for the report of transmission fluid leaking from its containment area into a storm water drain.
Duty 3, HIRT 31 (Hazardous Incident Response Team), and DECON 31 arrived on scene to investigate the information initially reported to Communications while other units staged on Shockley Drive. The Incident Command Post was established in the BP gas station's entrance near the Alpha/Delta corner of Dar Cars. Management from the facility advised the situation at hand was a 700-gallon tank leaking transmission fluid and the containment pit was only capable of holding about 500 gallon of product.
After the entry team from Station 31 controlled the leak and recovered as much product as possible, Command held units from Stations 31 and 3 for clean up. Command requested additional assistance from Frederick County's Wastewater Treatment/Disposal Department, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and a private contractor. The Maryland State Police also responded to assist with the investigation. After the contractor arrived and assumed responsibility for the remaining recovery efforts, the Incident Commander released the remaining units and terminated Command.
