House Fire in New Market

By Chief Officer Brendan Beaton
April 29, 2009

Mid afternoon, Frederick County Emergency Communications Center alerted a fire box in the New Market District. Units from Frederick, Carroll, Montgomery, and Howard County's quickly responded. The Emergency Communications Center advised responding units that the occupant believed her shed was on fire with extension into the house. Duty 15 approaching the scene reported heavy smoke in the area. Duty 15 arrived on the scene and advised that he had a two-story single family dwelling with heavy fire from the charlie side. He established command and began formulating his plan of attack. Units from New Market District Volunteer Fire Company along with their Green Valley substation arrived on the scene, laying large diameter supply line into the scene and beginning an aggressive interior attack. Units quickly determined that the interior conditions were deteriorating rapidly and an evacuation was sounded. Chief 3-1 arrived on the scene and was assigned the operations division. Crews again attempted to make an interior attack. Just as crew were beginning to gain control of the fire in the basement and the first floor, the attic area was consumed by fire and once again, the evacuation was sounded for personnel safety. Truck 42 was positioned for ladder pipe operations to knock down the bulk of the fire which was now through the roof. After a quick knock by Truck 42, small diameter hand lines were once again utilized to hit the hot spots that remained. Montgomery County's Engine 713 was called up closer to the fire ground to utilize their Compressed Air Foam system to blanket the hot spots that remained. The fire was investigated by the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service's Fire Marshall's Bureau. Crews were continually rehabilitated and placed in service upon completion of the overhaul process.
