| Fire and rescue units from Frederick County and Fort Detrick were dispatched to the rear of 4615 Wedgewood Blvd at 2055 hours for a reported hazardous material incident. Units arrived on the scene at 2100 hours and found a tractor-trailer that was being picked up to the rear of the building with a hazardous substance spilled inside the rear of the trailer. The substance was believed to be Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate. A crew had come to pick up the trailer when they noticed the spilled substance. One of the operators of the truck was decontaminated by the hazardous materials crews on the scene and transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital for evaluation while the other individual refused treatment. Sodium Dodecly Sulfate is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. It causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract and may cause allergic skin or respiratory reaction. Crews mitigated the hazard and remained on the scene, until 2330 hours, awaiting the arrival of a private clean up company from Baltimore to dispose of the hazardous material. |
