Structure 3-3 Turns Into Two Alarmer Downtown

By Chief Officer Michael Kehne
March 5, 2010

At approx. 1223hrs, Structure 3-3 was dispatched for a garage on fire in the area of South Bentz Street and Gaithers Alley. Soon after dispatch and on the main channel, C20 went on the scene with heavy fire showing from a garage. C3-2 just leaving station 3 arrived soon after C20 report and established Command on South Bentz Street and Gaithers Alley. Command reported 3 to 4 garges fully involved with exposure problems on Side B, C and D, Command requested the remainder of the Box be filled and the Safety Task Force dispatched. E22 arrived first and layed out from Saint Street and Bentz and deployed several handlines for operation, ET34 arrived and supplied E22. Command reported crews were making aggressive attack on the garage and had the Safety stage at West South Street and South Bentz Street. As this was being done C20 reported that the rear #229 West South Street was now on fire and needed resources to that location. Command reported to ECC of the situation and requested the 2nd Alarm to assist with fire attack and additional manpower. Command advised C2-1 was assigned Division A of the garages and Battalion 901 was assigned West South Street Command on Tach 40. Command reported that units were being pulled out of the garages due to deteriorating conditions and the lack of manpower on scene. As the evacuation was being given and the operations were turning to defensive on the garages heavy fire was venting from the rear. Once units arrived on scene they were quickly put to work on the garages and house, to complete both operations. Command reported the fire was knocked down and continued to hold all units for extensive overhaul and assisting the FM office for the investigation. At the 2 hour mark units were starting to be released by Command and the scene was turned over to the FM office and the Red Cross to assist the homeowners of #229 West South Street. I want to thank all personnel on the scene that assisted with both operations, it went very well and everybody went home. No injuries were reported.
