Radio Upgrade

By Chief Officer Jerry Dorsey
August 26, 2010

On July 1, 2010 the Board of County Commissioners awarded the contract for the county's "Digital Radio System Upgrade" capital improvements project to Motorola, Inc. Over the next approximately eighteen months the project will upgrade the County's current analog, trunked 800 MHz radio system to the APCO Project 25 digital standard, including making improvements to system reliability, security, and performance.

A kick off briefing was held to mark the initiation of the project implementation team's efforts and give a high level overview of the project to representatives of the agencies who use the 800MHz system. The project meeting took place at the Law Enforcement Center in the first floor public meeting room at on Monday July 26, 2010. Detailed discussions with the agency designated radio system liaison personnel in each organization took place. While the majority of this project involves upgrading the back-end radio system infrastructure which will take place out of sight of the majority of the radio system's users, there will be the need to reprogram the radios currently operating on the fleet prior to the new system going live in the first quarter of 2012. Prior to this reprogramming, the project implementation team will meet with agency representatives to review their current talkgroup assignments and discuss any requested changes to the programming of their agency's radios.
